Key Facts

The African people who suffered the most from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade were civilized professional experts in multiple skills and trades from African kingdoms. Not slaves, but were enslaved.

They were organized and technologically advanced people long before the arrival of European enslavers.  Trying to suggest they were backward and inferior people is inaccurate, and does a disservice to the current descendants by imposing ignorance.  The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade not only distorted Africa’s economic development, it also distorted views of the history and importance of modern day Black American/Freedmen’s rich cultural and historical contributions to not only the United States, but the world.
